Using a regular Teflon (PTFE) frying pan on a BBQ grill is not recommended and can be unsafe. Teflon, a brand name for polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), is a non-stick coating commonly used on cookware. While Teflon is generally safe for stovetop and oven use within its specified temperature range, it can pose risks if used on a BBQ grill.

The main concern is that Teflon can start to break down and release toxic fumes at high temperatures, typically above 500°F (260°C). BBQ grills can easily exceed this temperature, especially when using charcoal or gas grills for direct grilling or searing.

When Teflon reaches its temperature limit, it can emit perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and other potentially harmful chemicals. Inhaling these fumes can cause flu-like symptoms known as "Teflon flu" and may be particularly dangerous for birds. Additionally, the high heat can cause the Teflon coating to deteriorate, leading to damage and potentially contaminating your food.

To avoid any health risks, it's best to use cookware specifically designed for grilling, such as cast iron pans, stainless steel grilling baskets, or grilling mats made from heat-resistant materials. These alternatives can withstand the high temperatures of a BBQ grill and won't release harmful chemicals. Always follow the manufacturer's recommendations for safe usage of any cookware or utensils on your grill.
