The most harmful type of air conditioner, in terms of potential health and environmental impacts, is one that uses chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) or hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) as refrigerants. These substances are known to be ozone-depleting substances (ODS) and contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer, which protects the Earth from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

CFCs and HCFCs are potent greenhouse gases with a high global warming potential (GWP). When released into the atmosphere, they trap heat and contribute to climate change, leading to adverse effects on the environment and human health. The major health and environmental impacts of air conditioners using harmful refrigerants are as follows:

  1. Ozone Depletion: CFCs and HCFCs are stable compounds that can reach the stratosphere, where they release chlorine and bromine atoms upon exposure to UV radiation. These released atoms then catalytically destroy ozone molecules, leading to ozone layer depletion.   2. Climate Change: CFCs and HCFCs have high GWPs, meaning they have a much stronger warming effect per unit of mass compared to carbon dioxide (CO2). When emitted into the atmosphere, they contribute to global warming and climate change, leading to more frequent and severe heatwaves, extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and disruptions to ecosystems and agriculture.

  3. Air Quality: Air conditioners, regardless of the type of refrigerant used, can contribute to local air pollution if they are not well-maintained. Poorly maintained air conditioning units can release air pollutants like particulate matter, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and other contaminants, which can worsen indoor and outdoor air quality, potentially leading to respiratory issues and other health problems.

To mitigate these harmful impacts, international agreements, such as the Montreal Protocol, have been established to phase out the production and use of ozone-depleting substances, including CFCs and HCFCs. Instead, modern air conditioners now use more environmentally friendly refrigerants, such as hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) or hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs), which have much lower ozone depletion potential and significantly lower GWPs.
