In Bosch dishwashers (and many other dishwashers), the salt is not used for water softening purposes but rather for a specific component called the "water softener unit." This unit is different from a traditional water softener system you might find in a home's water supply.
The water softener unit in a dishwasher helps to soften the water used during the washing process. Hard water contains minerals like calcium and magnesium, and when hard water is used in a dishwasher, it can leave mineral deposits and spots on dishes and glassware.
By adding dishwasher salt to the water softener unit, you can prevent these mineral deposits from forming and ensure better cleaning performance. The salt works by regenerating the water softener unit, allowing it to continue removing hardness from the water effectively.
Here's how it works:
The dishwasher salt is poured into a designated compartment or reservoir in the dishwasher.
During the dishwasher's wash cycle, water flows through the water softener unit.
The resin beads inside the water softener unit attract and capture the calcium and magnesium ions from the water, effectively softening it.
Over time, as the resin beads become saturated with calcium and magnesium ions, the water softener unit needs to be regenerated.
The dishwasher's salt compartment contains a brine solution (a saltwater solution). During the regeneration process, the dishwasher pumps the brine into the water softener unit.
The brine solution washes over the resin beads, exchanging sodium ions from the salt for the calcium and magnesium ions that were captured earlier.
The calcium and magnesium ions are flushed out of the dishwasher, and the water softener unit is ready to soften water again.
By using dishwasher salt and maintaining the water softener unit properly, you can help ensure that your dishwasher performs at its best, providing cleaner dishes and extending the life of your dishwasher by preventing the buildup of mineral deposits. Always refer to your specific dishwasher's manual for the correct procedures on how to add salt and maintain the water softener unit, as the process may vary slightly between models.
