To get the smell out of pillows, you can follow these steps:

  1. Machine washing (for washable pillows): Check the care label on your pillows to ensure they are machine washable. If they are, remove the pillowcases and any pillow protectors, and wash the pillows on a gentle cycle using a mild detergent. Adding a cup of white vinegar to the wash can help remove odors. Make sure to wash two pillows together to balance the load and prevent the machine from getting off balance.

  2. Spot cleaning (for non-washable pillows): If your pillows are not machine washable, spot cleaning can be done to remove stains and odors. Mix a small amount of mild detergent with water and use a clean cloth or sponge to spot clean the affected areas. Avoid soaking the pillow, as excessive moisture can lead to mold or mildew growth.

  3. Sun drying: After washing or spot cleaning, if possible, place the pillows outside in direct sunlight to dry. Sunlight has natural antibacterial properties and can help eliminate odors.

  4. Dryer with tennis balls: For machine-washable pillows, you can place them in the dryer with a couple of clean tennis balls. The tennis balls will help fluff the pillows and prevent clumping while removing moisture and odors.

  5. Baking soda: Sprinkle baking soda over the pillows and let it sit for a few hours or overnight. Baking soda is excellent for absorbing odors. Afterward, use a vacuum cleaner to remove the baking soda.

  6. Lavender or essential oils: If you like the scent of lavender or other essential oils, you can add a few drops to the pillows after washing and drying or mix it with baking soda before sprinkling it on the pillows. Remember to use essential oils sparingly.

  7. Pillow protectors: Consider using pillow protectors in the future to prevent sweat, body oils, and dust from getting into the pillows and causing odors. Pillow protectors can be easily removed and washed regularly.

Keep in mind that some pillows, such as memory foam pillows, may have specific cleaning instructions from the manufacturer. Always check the care label or the manufacturer's guidelines before attempting to clean your pillows. Additionally, if your pillows are old, worn out, or have been heavily soiled, it may be time to replace them for better sleep hygiene and comfort.
