The inside of an oven gets hot when it is preheated for cooking through a process called convection and radiation.

  1. Electric Ovens: In an electric oven, the heat is generated by an electric heating element located either at the bottom or the top of the oven, or both. When you set the desired temperature and turn on the oven, the heating element starts to generate electrical resistance, which produces heat. The element's high resistance to the electric current causes it to heat up quickly.

  2. Gas Ovens: Gas ovens use a gas burner located at the bottom of the oven to produce heat. When the oven is turned on and set to the desired temperature, the gas valve opens, allowing gas to flow to the burner. The burner then ignites the gas, creating a flame that heats up the oven's interior.

Once the heating element or gas burner is activated, the oven's temperature starts to rise. The thermostat in the oven continuously monitors the temperature and cycles the heating element or gas burner on and off to maintain the set temperature.

The hot air inside the oven then circulates through the interior due to convection. Convection is the process where heat is transferred through the movement of fluid (in this case, air). When the air inside the oven is heated, it becomes less dense and rises while cooler air moves in to take its place. This creates a circular flow of hot air that evenly distributes the heat throughout the oven, ensuring uniform cooking of the food.

Additionally, the oven walls and racks absorb and emit infrared radiation, contributing to the overall heating process. Infrared radiation is a form of electromagnetic radiation that carries heat energy and can transfer heat directly to the food, helping to cook it.

The combination of convection and radiation ensures that the inside of the oven gets hot and maintains the desired temperature for cooking your food effectively and efficiently.
