To quickly release the pressure from an Instant Pot Duo, you can use the Quick Release method. Here's how to do it:
Finish Cooking: Once the cooking time is complete for your recipe, the Instant Pot will automatically switch to the "Keep Warm" mode, and the digital display will show "L0:00" or a similar time, indicating the elapsed time since the cooking ended.
Locate the Steam Release Valve: The steam release valve is a small knob on the top of the Instant Pot lid. It has two positions: Sealing and Venting. Before using the Quick Release method, ensure the steam release valve is set to the Sealing position during the cooking process. If it's not in the Sealing position, you might need to cancel the "Keep Warm" mode, move the valve to Sealing, and then restart the Quick Release process.
Use a Tool or Utensil: To prevent direct contact with the hot steam, you can use a long-handled utensil, like a wooden spoon or tongs, to gently move the steam release valve from the Sealing position to the Venting position. Alternatively, some Instant Pot models have a steam release button that you can push to release the pressure.
Quick Release the Pressure: As you move the steam release valve to the Venting position, you'll hear a hissing sound as the steam starts to release from the Instant Pot. The process of quick releasing the pressure typically takes a few minutes, depending on the contents of the pot and the pressure built up inside.
Wait for the Floating Valve to Drop: Once the pressure is fully released, the floating valve (metal pin) located next to the steam release valve will drop. This indicates that it's safe to open the Instant Pot lid.
Open the Lid Safely: After the floating valve has dropped, you can carefully open the Instant Pot lid. Tilt the lid away from you to avoid any residual steam that might still be inside the pot.
Always exercise caution when using the Quick Release method, as the steam released is very hot and can cause burns. Keep your hands and face away from the steam and avoid blocking the steam release valve during the process.
For certain recipes with delicate or frothy ingredients (like oatmeal, soups with lots of liquid, etc.), it might be advisable to use the Natural Release method, where you allow the pressure to drop on its own over time. Natural Release prevents the contents from foaming or spewing out when you open the Instant Pot.
